The absolute centerpiece of regional tourism, Udawalawe National Park spans 30,821 hectares and was established in 1972 as a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the Udawalawe Reservoir. The park supports a permanent, healthy population of 500 to 700 Asian elephants.
The sparse vegetation allows for unparalleled, unobstructed wildlife viewing compared to other Asian reserves. Visitors routinely observe complex herd dynamics, featuring groups of up to 50 individuals bathing, foraging, and socializing.
Duration: Half-day (3.5 hours) or Full-day (5 hours) | Best Time: 6:00 AM or 3:00 PM
Located just five minutes from the national park's main gates, this ethical facility was established in 1995 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. Unlike commercial elephant orphanages, the Transit Home operates with a strictly ethical mandate.
The facility is dedicated solely to the rescue, clinical rehabilitation, and eventual release of orphaned elephant calves back into the wild. Visitors can witness scheduled milk-feeding sessions from elevated viewing platforms.
Duration: 1.5 hours | Timing: Align with feeding schedules
While elephants dominate the landscape, Udawalawa is quietly revered by the global ornithological community as a premier bird-watching sanctuary. The intersection of the Walawe River, reservoir wetlands, and scrub forests creates a hyper-dense avian habitat.
The region boasts over 184 documented bird species, including 33 migratory populations. Patient birders can spot highly sought-after endemic species such as the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Spurfowl, and Sri Lanka Junglefowl.
Duration: 3 hours | Best Time: 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Dining at Mastodon is a central pillar of the guest experience. We transition away from repetitive buffets to offer a meticulously crafted Ala Carte menu that celebrates localized flavors and international techniques.
